Dr. Philip Lowe took up duties as Governor on 18 September 2016. As Governor, he is also the Chair of the Reserve Bank Board, the Reserve Bank Payments System Board and the Australian Council of Financial Regulators. Dr. Lowe is the Chair of the Committee on the Global Financial System of the Bank for International Settlements and is a member of the Financial Stability Board.
Dr. Lowe is well known within EMEAP, having participated as Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Deputy Governor since 2012.
Prior to his appointment as Governor, Dr. Lowe held the positions of Deputy Governor, Assistant Governor (Economic) and Assistant Governor (Financial System) at the RBA. He also spent two years with the Bank for International Settlements working on financial stability issues. Dr. Lowe holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a B.Comm (Honours) in Economics/Econometrics from the University of New South Wales. He has authored numerous papers, including on the linkages between monetary policy and financial stability.
